A homebrew RPG setting, by Bevan Woodhouse

  • Arenth is the name for the universe that surrounds the Planet Arenth, the first orbit in the Xenned star system. History ranges from the Empires of the Cordovians and the Sylvus, to the arrival of the humans and the rise of the Caninids and finally to the Humanic Exodus and the Caninid Hegemony over Arenth and beyond.

  • Arenth is the product of several years ongoing work and one failed project named Albia. Due to a computer crash all work on Albia was lost. In mid-2006 Bevan ressurected Albia and gave it a new name; Arenth. Over the months he made new races, tweaked the old ones and gave it a new Solar System making it physically more plausible than its predecessor.

  • Caninids

Caninids are tall muscular humanoids. They have strong angular faces with high cheekbones and pale skin. Their hair ranges from red, light brown and white blonde, with browns and blonde predominating, usually worn long by both males and females. It is common for Caninid women to keep their hair grown to the small of their backs. Caninid males often sport facial hair usually dark in colour that reaches from under the chin to its cheekbones. Caninid eye colours are blue, green or colours in between. The iris usually covers the white of their eyes. Caninids sport large pointed ears and two pairs of fangs, the two larger on the upper set of teeth.

The Caninids are thought to have originated in the south-eastern continent, although by the humans arrival they had spread over much of the southern hemisphere. In their early genesis Proto-Caninids could be divided into two distinct groups. Proto-Caninids were semi-upright bipeds. The were mainly carnivores but were known to supplement their diet with fruits. Proto-Caninids were covered with a soft layer of fur, much like a wolves coat. The eastern Caninids were more aggressive territorialy and faster breeding. Eastern Proto-Caninids could give birth to litters of 1-4 children every six months, whereas Western Proto-Cainids could only give birth to 1-2 children every 9 months. Early proto Caninids moved in packs, following major herds throughout the land. They were a common sight during the Cordovian and later Sylvus period. In the aftermath of the Mount Sylyda eruption the western Caninids began to die out from a variety of disease, temperature change and lack of food. Although the eastern Caninids numbers dropped they did not disappear and within a few decades they regained their former numbers.

The arrival of the three human towers (The Golden Pillars) changed Caninid life forever, the human settlements forced the Caninids out of the fertile hunting grounds and into the hills. More and more Caninids began to walk on two legs in order to spot humans. The Caninids, being on the edge of true sentience were rounded up and used as slave labour in the manufacturing core of the Stewartan Tower and wild levies in the Stewartan army.

The Caninids evolved at an almost unnatural speed, quickly adapting to their new way of life and yet longing for the life they once knew. Almost eight hundred years after they were first enslaved the Caninids rebelled against their Stewartan overlords. The rebellion started in the northern provinces, were influence was weak and Caninids were often used themselves as provincial guards. Striking from the frontier the Caninids attacked, moving south and raising more rebels along the way. Stewartan forts and towns were overrun and razed by the marauding Caninids. In an effort to destroy the monolithic symbol of their enslavement they moved towards the Stewartan tower, now the centre of the grand city of Tolleropolis. The Stewartan army marched out to meet the invaders.

The Stewartan legions now faced the very beings that they had relied on to fight the bloodiest battles for them. The Stewartans tried in vain to hold the line against the Caninids. The Stewartans were overwhelmed by numbers and ferocity of the Caninids, The Stewartan line failed and the army turned to rout. Stewartans dropped their weapons and stripped their armour in the attempt to hasten to the city walls. It was to no avail, Caninid reinforcements from the south had blocked the way and duly massacred the retreating Stewartans. Only the walls stood between the Caninid mob and the Golden Pillar of Tolleropolis. The Caninids inside the Pillar, still unaware of the events outside the city, slaved on, producing weapons for a now non-existant army.

The Caninids outside knew well what was going on inside the city, and turned to a novel solution to scale the weakly defended walls, using the defeated Stewartan soldiers and shields they approached the city walls and piled the bodies until they were high enough to scale them. Then the Caninids flooded into the city burning and looting as they made their way to the tower, then tearing their way inside they freed the Caninids and did as much damage as they could to the innards of the Golden Pillar, before leaving and making their way north.

The Caninids made their way north, unhindered by the decimated Stewartan Legions they raided northern ports and captured Stewartan vessels. There with rudimentary knowledge of sailing and the unbreakable desire for freedom they headed out onto the open seas. The journey was long and dangerous, many vessels simply disappeared from view and became lost into the deep blue, others were knocked off course from the main fleet and ended up landing in Millayn and the western isles leaving scattered colonies behind them.

After twenty eight days of sailing the shores of Gwydonia were sighted, it was said that forty nine ships hit the shore that day that marked the the start of the 3rd age (marked 3.e). The Caninids settled the coastline and began to move inland, more free Caninids joined them through various means and soon the entire eastern half of Gwydonia was settled. The Caninids now called themselves Gwydonians and were a prosperous and mostly peaceful people, trade links were opened with the Sylvus and with the humans and the southern cities became rich, the northern towns however, without ports and trade routes stayed poor and the restless tribes began to raid others for food and materials. Utilising the native horses they made lightening raids on fellow Gwydonians.

Forming up Citizen armies armed with Bronze weapons and armour from the abundant resources, the southern city Kingdoms of Gwydonia marched north in attempt to bring the northern Gwydonian tribes to heel. In 377 3.e the tribes gathered their warriors and met the Gwydonians head on outside the city of Kathea.

The battle of Kathea was fought in late spring both sides aligning on a wide plain, a few miles outside the city. As records indicate outlying Gwydonian units were swept up by masses of tribal cavalry, the centre units formed into squares pushing spears out between their bronze shields, faced with an unbreakable foe and reeling from mounting casualties the tribes withdrew northwards. The Gwydonians followed and forced the northerners from their homes and westwards across the Taenstall landbridge.

From this point onwards the Caninids split into two different races, the fair haired slender East Caninids or Gwydonians or the more muscular and diverse West Caninids who would later become dominated by the Bevananians.
  • Sylvus

The Sylvus are an ancient race, only eclipsed in age by the elusive Cordovians. The Sylvus are of average human height, usually around 5'8 to 6'2". Their skin ranges from light to dark blue and their hair from white to dark red. They weigh less than most humanoids and are often physically weaker than their Caninid and human rivals. The Sylvus had the blessing of evolving in mostly secretive conditions, far removed from many natural dangers. The only other sentient beings at this time were the Cordovians. But the Syvlus were regarded with scant interest by the Cordovians who had more things to worry about at the time.
