The Origin of the Gods

  • The Origin of the Gods

    Elementary Particles
Long ago, there was nothing but the astral plane and incoherent energy of six types: Positive, Negative, earth, fire, wind, and air. Slowly, this energy began bubbling. Like energies attracted each other, and opposites clashed, occasionally repelling each other. The like energies clustered together in small globs and moved about; the chaos as one, as a flock of birds would. Occasionally, a cluster of one type would meet a cluster of its opposite type and they would clash. The larger one would usually scatter the smaller into tiny fragments that would take eons to reform. Occasionally, a lone fragment of energy would meet a larger cluster of differing but not opposite energy and would inhabit the large blob, slightly altering its habits and movement. Occasionally, two like forms of energy would meet each other and become a single larger fragment. Sometimes two like forms of energy inhabited by two opposite fragments would meet and be unable to merge, or even sometimes clash. The most violent tremors occurred when opposite energies inhabited by opposite energies met. Soon, there were several large globs of various types of energy floating around the astral plane, inhabited by various types of other energies.

    Genesis of Intelligence
The different variations of energy began to develop different forms of semi-consciousness, sometimes recognizing another energy it had previously met, sometimes offering up some of its life force to a larger, rival energy in exchange for escape. Soon the energies learned to move in a certain direction on the plane, where there would be more energies of the same type and fewer globs of rival types. After a while of this, the passage of so much of the same energy tainted the plane itself, so that certain forms of energy felt more at home in it than others.

    The Titans
Eventually, there were three energies that were larger than the rest. One was a large blob of Positive energy, tinted with the firmness of earth and the tenacity of fire, a being of integrity that wouldn’t give up until its needs were met. Another was the element of water, hosting elusive wisps of air and the lack of honor that comes with negative energy, the essence of trickery. The third was a negative being, from which evil radiated. It had the temper of fire and the callousness of earth. It was a fiend brimming with hatred. They were the Great Titans. These three beings, risen above the rest, had developed some measure of conscious thought and knowledge of one another and their opposing goals. The three entities began gathering like-minded energies, lesser Titans, as allies and minions, and the great cosmic war began.

    Creation of the Universe
The fighting was such that it shook the very foundations upon which the void was built. Fragments of energy flew with such velocity that many pieces of opposing energy were forced together against their will. Most of the warring occurred in the center of the plane. The opposite energies forced together formed into coherent shapes, and the universe was born.

    Intelligence and the Outer Planes
At first, the entities paid it little mind, for what was the need? Soon, however, the war began giving the beings newfound intelligence and finally semi-empathy with which to communicate with each other. They realized that if the war continued the way it had, mutually assured destruction was certain. The beings agreed that if any further warring were to take place, it would be within the confines of this ball of conflicting energies. Together, the beings of pure energy shaped the ball of matter into the world as we know it today. The beings began sending their energy into the world, weakening themselves in order to put mortal creatures onto the material plane.

    The Gods
Of course, this alliance could not last. The Titan of Trickery, composed of water, with air and negative energy influencing its actions, stabbed the god of positive energy in the back, assaulting it with a cruel attack. Most of the god’s essence was scattered, and the god itself was stunned. The god of evil, realizing that the watery energy could not be trusted, attacked with all its might. The resulting battle also scattered most of their energy, sending the weakened beings limping home supported by their allies. The Titans retreated to their own parts of the void and built forces of energy that prevented other gods from entering or leaving. From these fortresses, they still directed the actions of the universe, but were so weakened as to be different entities than they once were. They were known as the Gods. The ethereal plane was created as a bridge between the universe and the Gods. They happily inhabited their realms, influencing the world from there. Only the purest Gods inhabited the inner planes. The others remained in the outer planes. From there, the deities lived in an uneasy truce, except on the material plane, where the battle was on full tilt.

So began The Age of Angels.
