A Shola View: Shadow and Substance
-
Shola call these lands Dolorienithanamaria, "The Land Between Shadows." Learned mages, aware of the source of their power, are among the few who know this to be true. Endailya is simply a place of existence, a Realm of Being, brought to life by the influence of the Realms of Shadow.
How many Realms of Shadow exist is not known, but five are said to hold the greatest sway over Endailya. Where Shadow touches our realm, the world and all its inhabitants are formed. Some of these, such as the Shola, still travel between the Shadow and Substance at their birth and death. Many believe that all creatures make this journey, though most must leave their physical forms behind.
This distinction has lead some races to be called "immortal" and other "mortal." Though all pass to some other form upon death, immortality is marked by the creation of a child from the Shadow itself and the return of that creature in its entirety upon death. Thus the body of a Shola cannot remain in this world, for it is formed of Shadow and not of Substance. For mortal races, only the life force returns to the Realm of Shadow from which it originated.
This is not to say that life and death is not a mystery. Those who are able to tap the energies of the Shadow know well that life is far more than this simple explanation can account for.
