He is a leader of the rebellion of the Seven Cities against the Malazan Empire.

Leoman was abandoned as a child, so was raised as an orphan by the priests of Scalissara, Goddess of Olives in Y'Ghatan. Scalissara is no longer worshipped, having failed her followers too many times. Children raised by priests of Scalissara were raised in the way of the Cold Dream, which teaches something about spiritual duality regarding desire and necessity. Leoman behaved badly and was expelled, to raise himself on the streets and in the desert.
