The Edur armies and naval fleet are outside the city of Letheras, ready to attack. Shurq has replaced the pipe in her head with a diamond stopper. As the Edur forces arrive, Tehol stays on his rooftop with his guard. Shurq goes elsewhere. The King, Brys Beddict, Nifadas, and Nisall wait in the Eternal Domicile for attackers, with Kuru Qan lying on the floor in a hallway. While checking on Kuru Qan, Brys finds Gerun Eberict standing over him with a sword. Brys orders him to leave, threatening to fight him. Gerun's guards show up and they leave. Meanwhile, Bugg stands on the city wall watching the Edur armies and Jheck approach. He is with an artist who paints the standard that the Edur bear: two colours diagonally divided, red on the right, brown on the left.

Bugg goes to a ship at the docks, where he meets Shand, Iron Bars, Corlo, and other members of the Crimson Guard. He hurriedly asks the Crimson Guardsmen to come with him to kill the god of the Jheck. The Jheck are using the Tiste Edur to get into Letheras and reunite with their god. The god is a D'ivers, not a Soletaken. Killing the god is a favour for Turudal Brizad, the Errant. The Guardsmen go into a ruined temple and fight six cat-like lizards, who together are the Jheck god, named The Pack. One of the Crimson Guards is killed in the battle. Afterwards, B'nagga makes a sneak attack at Turudal Brizad, but Iron Bars stops him and kills him. While dying, B'nagga pisses all over Iron Bars, putting him in an even worse mood. Bugg senses trouble at the dead Azath House, so asks Iron Bars to go with him to investigate.

Kettle is alone at the dead Azath tower, afraid of the battle going on in the city. She gets pulled into one of the barrows, and finds herself in a swamp. There are two swords sticking in the mud, and a man in the water asks Kettle to bring the swords to him. A woman pulls him under the water. Kettle picks up the swords and brings them to the edge of the water.

Rhulad, Trull, and other Edur enter the city and face Letherii soldiers blocking a bridge, led by Moroch Nevath. Rhulad insists that Hannan Mosag not use his sorcery for the fight, and charges at Moroch. The two fight and skewer each other on their swords, dying. Rhulad returns from the dead again, screaming for Udinaas. Rhulad's mother, Uruth, hears his screams and looks for Udinaas, but discovers that he is missing. While her back is turned, Mayen, in rough shape because of her addiction, runs off into the city. The Wyval inside Udinaas had woken up and taken complete control of Udinaas. In Wyval form, he was in the city killing Jheck wolves.

The water demon that the Edur have captured and are using to attack Lether believes that it will find a great source of power in Letheras. Letheras has many canals, and the demon will seek out the power source through these canals in order to gain the power of many gods and then break free of its captors. However, the power source is actually a trap laid out by Kuru Qan. He knew that this demon was the greatest weapon that the Edur had, so has been focusing all his energy on the trap. After entering Letheras, the demon finds an underwater passage beneath the city that leads to Settle Lake. Once there, Kuru Qan signals to Bugg to spring the trap. Bugg calls in a favor from the Jaghut he met at a quarry, and she agrees to help. The lake freezes into a solid block of ice, capturing the demon inside.
