Seren Pedac asks Corlo about the type of magic he uses. He explains that he specializes in Mockra magic, which is the Warren of the Mind. He says that this continent is blocked from the Warrens. The Holds are from an earlier time than the Warrens, when forces were more wild. Some people are born with a natural talent for one Warren over others. Seren asks if he can wipe some of her memories. He warns against it. Instead, he helps her release her anguish over those memories by helping her shamelessly cry like a baby. He tells her that she has a natural talent for Mockros, as she has been successfully controlling her feelings and burying memories all her life.
They arrive at the town of Brous, where a tomb is being excavated by the Letherii army. The tomb contains a demon that they are trying to enslave. The leader of Brous has declared independence from Lether because the King just sits in his palace and the Ceda Kuru Qan is mad.

Trull's captain, Ahlrada Ahn, tells him that the other commanders are going to ask Fear to replace Trull. He recommends Trull resign before they do so. Ahlrada also reveals that he has Tiste Andii blood. Ahlrada explains that the Andii were betrayed by the Edur, not the other way around as Edur history teaches. He says that the Andii of Bluerose will take advantage of the war to get revenge on the Edur. Trull meets with Fear and their mother Uruth. She demands that Trull be respected as a courageous warrior. The demon deserved to be healed just like anyone else who fought in the battle. However, she does not approve of Trull speaking against the war, and against the Emperor. She wants to use Trull's demon, Lilac, to open a warren to his home warren and make an alliance with the Kenyll'rah Tyrant, who leads the Kenyll'rah in a losing war against an aggressor called the Korvalahrai. Before she can do this, Trull offers to become Lilac's master, which would let him send Lilac home. Lilac tricks him into thinking that Uruth will kill him in order to open a portal to his home world. After Lilac is sent home, Uruth tells Trull that she would not have killed Lilac. She will use another demon instead.
Hull Beddict asks Udinaas about his family's debt. Udinaas explains that a lender named Huldo is owed money. Tehol owns Huldo, so Hull clears Udinaas' debt and asks nothing in return. Thus, Udinaas is no longer of the Indebted class.
Rhulad explains to Udinaas that he just used his power to drown a world. In order to gain Kenyll'rah demons as willing allies, he diverted a river from the Kenyll'rah warren upon which invading Korvalahrai boats were sailing. The river and boats were diverted into another warren, which became flooded. The entire world within the flooded warren was destroyed. After conquering Lether, Rhulad wants to conquer all the other continents of the world.
