The King of Letheras' new palace, the Eternal Domicile, is complete but not yet in use. Kuru Qan is on the floor of the throne room inspecting the tiles. Brys tells him that the King needs him regarding the war and impending attack on Letheras. Kuru Qan insists that he is too busy and gets Brys to help him count the tiles. He then sends Brys away to care for his brother, who he must not kill. He does not elaborate on what that is supposed to mean and which brother to care for. Brys assumes that Kuru Qan has gone mad.

Bugg has some startling revelations for Tehol. He explains that the Edur are using a power other than Kurald Emurlahn. Also, there used to be a Hold of Death in the time of the First Empire, but the Jaghut froze much of the continent, including the Hold of Death. Spirits of this continent could not travel to the Hold when a person died. It now seems to be thawing, and the Hold of Death has returned. Also, the people of Bluerose (a country to the east) are Tiste Andii. Tehol is very suspicious about Bugg's wide range of knowledge. Many of the names and places that Bugg mentions are words that Tehol has never heard before.

Turudal Brizad explains some history to Brys. Contrary to Letherii history books, the First Empire destroyed itself through a ritual that went out of control. The Jheck were their enemies, who they forced back into the frozen north, but they are now returning to get revenge on the descendants of the First Empire.
Moroch Nevath, guard to the Prince, returns to the city and meets Turudal Brizad. Turudal says that Moroch is not looked at fondly, since he failed to protect the Prince and Queen. He offers a job to Moroch that might help him regain his honour. The job is to kill the god of the Jheck, who is in the city of Letheras. If the god is killed, the Jheck will no longer wish to attack Letheras.
Bugg encounters the god of the Jheck and speaks with him. By returning to the world, the Jheck will again worship the god, and as a consequence the T'lann Imass may return. The god wants to prevent the return of the T'lann Imass, to which Bugg agrees.
