Hannan Mosag tells Emperor Rhulad that he has had dreams of a lost population of Tiste Edur. After Scabandari Bloodeye's time, the Edur were scattered. This group Mosag dreams about is living in a Warren somewhere, and they are not surviving well. Some have been enslaved. Rhulad says that they must someday rescue these Edur. Mosag also suggests that they use warrens to travel quickly across the continent. Rhulad says that they could open one warren into another to cause devastation, such as if an ocean from one realm were emptied into the desert of another. During the meeting Mayen mentions that Feather Witch claims that Udinaas is possessed by a Wyval. Rhulad tells everyone to leave except Udinaas. He uses a wraith to inspect Udinaas and discover the truth. The wraith is Wither, so he lies to Rhulad and says Udinaas is clean. Rhulad now trusts Udinaas as the only one who tells the truth.

Seren and the Crimson Guard are still on their way to Letheras. Seren finds a clearing in a forest where there are half-buried statues to old Tarthenal gods. The statues are hot and the grass around them is burnt. While talking to Iron Bars, she finds out that he must be very old. He and the Crimson Guard are "Avowed", which means "...they swore to return their prince to his lands. He was driven out, you see, by the cursed Emperor Kellanved." (Midnight Tides, p. 515, UK edition, trade paperback.) The vow has kept them alive for an unnatural length of time. Seren reveals to Iron Bars that she used to be in a relationship with a man from Bluerose. The man had dark skin, was tall, and very serious. She ended the relationship with him because he was very cynical and depressing. She says the people of Bluerose worship someone named the "Black-winged Lord". They find a group of raped, robbed, and killed people, and get revenge for them by tracking down the group who did this and killing them.
