The Nerek in Hiroth have survived by staying on the consecrated ground. For the first time since the Letherii conquered them, they have gained the ability to travel magically over great distances. They set out to find Hull Beddict.

The Edur use wraiths and demons in their army, and the Jheck fight along side them. The Letherii use fire and lightning, but the Edur mages use much more powerful magic that creates huge walls made out of bones. The Edur easily defeat the Letherii, and manage to capture Queen Janall and Prince Quillas. The source of the Edur power comes from the sword gifted the Rhulad. The power is so great that it permanently deforms and harms the Edur mages.

After the battle, Trull finds a demon wounded with quarrels but still alive and suffering. He asks a mage to heal the demon, but she refuses and says that the demon does not deserve to be healed. Trull loses control of his anger and knocks the mage down with the back of his hand. She vows to report his attack and get him banished. Fear interferes and sends Trull away. Trull finds another mage who is willing to heal the demon, and binds the demon to Trull. The demon introduces itself as Lilac, a caster of nets in its home world. It is not a warrior and does not know what war it is fighting.

Trull and Fear argue about the war. Trull insists that Fear should question the motives of Kannan Mosag and Rhulad. Knowing the Father Shadow is dead, they must have allied with a different god, but have not told the Edur people who it is. Fear is angered by Trull's treason and attacks him, but Lilac defends Trull.
