Trull and his warriors wait in hiding from Letherii forces. Wraiths and Jheck wolves pass them. B'nagga arrives to inform Trull that the Letherii detected them and are in retreat. The wraiths and Jheck will pursue them to High Fort. News has arrived that the Letherii fled First Maiden Fort before battle began, and went to Fent Reach where they will try to defend themselves. Edur forces remain hidden outside Trate, ready for a surprise attack.

Edur ships approach Trate with the sea spirit. The spirit attacks the city and kills the two Letherii mages who were stationed there. The Edur attack from the boats, and from north and east. Rhulad and Udinaas are with the ground forces.

Seren spends her time in Trate getting drunk in a bar. She meets Iron Bars, who says he and his people, members of the Crimson Guard, came to this continent after fleeing Assail. He has booked a boat in Letheras to take them home, and he wants Seren to come with him because she "ain't blind." While the city is under attack, Iron Bars confronts Rhulad and easily kills him by breaking his neck with one hand. Iron Bars, Seren, and other members of the Crimson Guard, go through a portal to a Warren. They say this is the first warren they have found in the past two years.

The Warren is Kurald Galain, but the Crimson Guard's mage, Corlo, says that he expected to find the Warren of Shadow. It seems that the Edur are using power from the Warren of Darkness instead. Inside, they are lost so speak to a Tiste Andii spirit. The spirit is Sandalath Drukorlat, and she asks them to throw a ring into the ocean so that it can be reunited with her remains, in exchange for her guidance through the Warren. They agree. She leads them to an exit which takes them near the city of Katter, where they throw the ring into the ocean.

Rhulad awakens once again on the beach with Withal and the Crippled God. He does not want to be returned to life. The Crippled God puts the sword at his feet. Rhulad picks it up to try to kill the god, but instead is resurrected. Wither complains that he is bored, so the god tells him to go down to the shore. Sandalath Drukorlat walks out of the sea. Withal is angry with the god, with how he takes lives as if they are possessions. He prays to Mael.
