Buruk the Pale and Seren Pedac cross the border into Lether. At the border, Seren puts her head against the black glass that she touched for healing during their trip north into Edur lands (Chapter 2). This time, she hears voices in conversation. They are predicting that much destruction and death will soon happen, and then realize that Seren is listening. They refer to her as one of two mistresses of a Hold. Seren stops touching the stone. During their travels, Buruk admits to being Indebted. He has been blackmailed to act as a spy, but no longer wishes to be taken advantage of.

They arrive in a town near the border, and find soldiers and a cadre of Letherii mages. The mages perform a ritual that creates a wall of energy which annihilates some of the Edur towns north of the border. Buruk and Seren become passengers on a barge and arrive at Trate, Buruk's home, the next day. Buruk says that Seren's contract as his Acquitor is now finished, and he poisons her so that she falls asleep. Before she falls asleep, he admits to being in love with her. She wakes and is instructed to pick up her belongings in the shed at Buruk's home, but not to enter his home. She hurries to his home and breaks inside, where she finds that he has hung himself.

The Edur villages were destroyed, but the Edur had already left. The Edur are ready to attack by land and sea. Trull leads a group south across a bridge. He is hated by the men he leads. The bridge is an ancient stone disc that very slowly turns. On the other side is a square panel on the ground with Jaghut writing on it. The panel moves while someone is standing on it. Trull's group kills a lone Faraed.

Udinaas has learned much about the past. The Letherii First Empire sailed the world and explored all six continents, meeting various races, and conquering much of it. It was the T'lan Imass who destroyed the First Empire.

Udinaas and Feather Witch travel to Starvald Demelain where they meet some T'lan Imass. They see the remains of a Meckros city, as if it had been dropped onto the land. They meet a boy, Rud Elalle, who is seven weeks old whose mother is Menandore. The boy has the ability to transform into a dragon. This is Udinaas' son. They also find a group of portals that lead to other realms.
