Udinaas is Rhulad's slave, and Feather Witch is Mayen's. Rhulad and Mayen have sex while their slaves are in the room. Feather Witch begins to cry, and Rhulad orders Udinaas to take her away. Outside, Udinaas tells her that the Edur will go to war to conquer Lether, and that this is her chance at freedom. All of the wraiths have been summoned, and all tribes have been summoned to war.

While Hull was away from the Hiroth village, he discovered the site where Scabandari Bloodeye's dragon skull remains. Hull guesses that this is Bloodeye's corpse, and that the Warlock King seeks revenge as part of the Edur's destiny. Seren explains that Rhulad is now Emperor, and scolds Hull for believing in destiny.

In a guest house, Prince Quillas talks about assassinating the Emperor and other Edur leaders. Nifadas dismisses the notion quickly. Hull and Seren Pedac join them, and together they meet with Rhulad. Rhulad makes it clear that the Edur are no longer interested in negotiating with the Letherii. He does not declare war, but it is implied. He tells Seren that she and Buruk the Pale have three days to get back to Lether, but the Nerek slaves must remain with the Edur. Hull Bedict pledges his allegiance to the Emperor and the Edur.

Hull proves his allegiance to the Emperor by explaining Letherii military strategy. His information matches the information that Hannan Mosag acquired, so Rhulad accepts Hull and dismisses everyone except Udinaas. Rhulad speaks of himself as "we". He explains that someone is whispering suggestions to him, telling him what to say. Udinaas says that Rhulad is like a slave to the man who gives him suggestions. It is a price for being returned from the dead and given the power of the sword. The sword's power is to control all the Andii wraiths.
