The Warlock King, the Sengars, and others meet with Rhulad. The King wants Rhulad to give the sword to him, but Rhulad says that it belongs to him. It was given to him by the one who made it, by the one who the Warlock King made a pact with. But it was known that the Warlock King would betray that pact, so the sword was given to Rhulad instead. Rhulad reveals that the shadow wraiths that Edur use in their magic are Tiste Andii spirits, the ones who were betrayed by the Edur in the time of Scabandari Bloodeye. The Andii spirits were enslaved to serve Edur as wraiths. Fear asks if Rhulad met with Edur ancestors while he was dead. Rhulad says that Edur spirits do not stay in this world because it is not the Edur homeworld. Rhulad asks that everyone kneel before him as an emperor. As emperor, he promises to lead the Tiste Edur back to their home. Fear is the first to kneel before Rhulad, followed by the Warlock King.

Udinaas spends time sitting at the shore, his feet in the water. As the tide rises, his legs become submerged in the cold water, and he isn't sure that he will be able to walk away from the tide. He sees the boats of the Letherii delegation arriving. The Locqui Wyval lifts him by his shoulders in its talons, and drops him on dry ground. His friend, Hulad, finds him and takes him back to the Sengar longhouse to warm up and sleep. Hulad sees bruises on Udinaas' shoulders, and comments that they are similar to the ones Feather Witch suffered when she was attacked by a Wyval.

Seren Pedac and Buruk the Pale are the only ones who greet the Letherii delegation on the shore. Prince Quillas is offended, but First Eunuch Nifadas is understanding after Seren explains what happened with Rhulad and the sword. They go back to Buruk's tents where they can get out of the rain and get warm.

Udinaas wakes from sleep as his wraith, Wither, tells him that his new master, Rhulad, needs him. Udinaas goes to where the Edur nobility are meeting, and finds everyone kneeling before Rhulad. Rhulad believes that Udinaas heard his summons, and Udinaas lies by saying he did hear it. Udinaas informs Rhulad that the Letherii delegation has arrived. Rhulad orders Udinaas to bring them. When Udinaas approaches Buruk's camp, he notes that ghosts seem to like Seren Pedac and that they stay near her, although she does not see them.

The Letherii meet the new Edur Emperor. Hannan Mosag speaks regarding the illegal seal harvest. Prince Quillas tries to convince the Edur that they must pay a debt for the seals that the Edur boats lost. Hannan Mosag says that they did not take back the seals that the Edur illegally took, so it is the Edur who owe a debt for the lost seals. The Letherii retire for the night, to continue negotiations another time.

Trull speaks against Rhulad, but Rhulad gets angry and tells him to be silent. Rhulad asks Fear for a gift: Mayen, who would be his empress. Fear, who has become loyal to Rhulad, grants this gift. Mayen stands on the dais with Rhulad and holds his hand. Everyone can see that she is scared, and did not desire to be empress. After the meeting, Udinaas warns Seren Pedac that the Letherii should prepare for war.
