In Letheras, there is an unseasonable rainstorm. Tehol and Bugg go to a whorehouse called the Temple, where Shurq Elalle has been working for a few days. Since Shurq regained sensation in her flesh, she has been spending all her time entertaining clients at the Temple. The Matron wants Shurq gone because she is stealing all the business from the other whores. Tehol tells Shurq that she can enjoy Ublala's company instead, so she agrees to leave the Temple.

Tehol meets with Kettle at the Azath tower. She says that one of the beings imprisoned at the tower is friendly to her and says he will help her when he is free. She refers to him as her uncle. One of the "bad ones" has offered to make Kettle an empress if she is freed. If the bad ones get out, she says that they will destroy everyone. She says that she will refer to Tehol as father, and Shurq as mother.

Turudal Brizad informs Brys Beddict that Chancellor Triban Gnol wants to speak with him. The Chancellor says he needs the King's army to be ready for war. It is implied that he has plans against the King.
Brys meets with Tehol Beddict for advice on the situation. He mentions that he will not be able to avenge Hull's death, if Hull gets himself killed at the Great Meeting. Tehol assures him that he would get vengeance for their brother. They discuss the rivalry within the palace. On one side is the Queen, Prince, the Chancellor, and Consort Turudal. On the other is the King, Unnutal Hebaz, Kuru Qan, and Nifadas. Tehol advises Brys to say nothing to either side and avoid the political situation altogether.

Shurq and Ublala join together to rob Gerun Eberict's mansion. Ublala creates a diversion while Shurq sneaks in through the front door. Inside she avoids many traps, until she enters a dark hallway where she meets an undead man. He recognizes that she is also undead but that her skin is in good shape and she smells good. She promises to get him the same services to improve his skin and odour if he helps her rob Gerun. She asks his name, and he says that he is Gerun's brother, Harlest Eberict. He was killed by Gerun ten years ago, and has been acting as Gerun's undead servant. They enter Gerun's office and steal his documents and money. Harlest claims that Gerun does not keep very much money in the office, but Shurq finds a jeweled box full of diamonds. Harlest is surprised, and guesses that Gerun must have cashed in some investments to pay for something very expensive. They leave the mansion together with Gerun's wealth.

Kettle feeds another murder victim to the ground at the Azath tower. The "bad ones" have begun a "hunt" beneath the ground and would soon be free. The "good one" who is her friend is stuck and cannot free himself anymore. Help is coming, but may not arrive in time. Meanwhile, the Azath tower has died.
