On a warm beach, Withal finds a Tiste Edur man naked on the shore. He wakes the man, who is disoriented, and tells him that his master wants to see him. A group of three Nachts accompany them. They enter a tent where Withal's master, The Crippled God, waits. He says that peace is "a poison that weakens the spirit". The Tiste Edur man is Rhulad Sengar, and The Crippled God says that the sword is a gift for him. Rhulad remembers that he died, and the god explains that this is the price for the gift. Rhulad's power grows with this death. The sword is the same one that the Sengars found in the Ice Fields. The god explains that the Warlock King wanted to use the Crippled God's power to protect the Edur, but the god wants war. Rhulad takes the sword, and Withal notices ambition in Rhulad's eyes.

The Sengar brothers return to Hiroth with Rhulad and the sword on a sled. Seren and Buruk observe. The Warlock King fiercely demands that they get the sword out of Rhulad's grasp, even if it means cutting off his hands. Tomad and Uruth forbid mutilating the body of their son. Trull insists that they take time to discuss the matter before taking action. All agree. Uruth orders Udinaas to prepare Rhulad's body for burial, and says he is to do it alone. It is noted that Seren and Buruk, outsiders, observed the argument between the King and other Edur. This causes concern, because it could be seen as a sign to the Letherii of weakness within the Edur tribes, especially with the Great Meeting only a few days away.

Udinaas uses gold coins, as is tradition for a blooded warrior who died in battle, to cover Rhulad's body. He then covers him in wax. While turning the body onto its back, Rhulad awakens and begins screaming. Trull and Fear arrive to find Udinaas consoling Rhulad. Udinaas pries the coins off of Rhulad's eyes. Rhulad asks that Udinaas stay with him. He then realizes that he still holds the sword from the Ice Fields, and smiles.
