Buruk the Pale, Seren Bedac, and the caravan have arrived at the Hiroth village and await their meeting with the Warlock King. They have been waiting five days, which is an unusual amount of time. The Nerek have not been fed, and the caravan has not been officially welcomed as guests. The Nerek are starving, so Seren requests an official welcome and some food. The first Edur she finds is Mayen. Mayen has started behaving like royalty, and feels that she is of high enough position to give welcome to the Nerek. She does so, and it causes controvery among the Nerek and others. Mayen should not be giving blessing to the Nerek ahead of the Warlock King's official welcome. It is also unknown how the Nerek react to a blessing coming from Mayen rather than the King, or another higher ranked Edur.

Udinaas' shadow wraith, Wither, grants him a vision. Udinaas sees Menandore and Sukul Ankhadu dragging the unconscious body of Sheltatha Lore, who is their cousin. Osserc, their father, approaches and disapproves of what they have done. They claim Sheltatha deserved what they did to her. They plan to imprison her in the Azath House with Silchas Ruin.
We learn that their mother, Tiam, died giving birth to them and all her children. Sukul says, "'Dies, and is reborn. Tiam and her children. Tiam and her lovers. Her thousand deaths, and yet nothing changes!'" (Midnight Tides, p. 197, UK edition, trade paperback).
Osserc says he has been arguing with Anomander Rake. Also, he informs them that Scabandari Bloodeye has been imprisoned by Mother Dark's first children, those who came before the Tiste Andii.
Buruk, Seren, and Hull meet the Warlock King for a meal. There is brief discussion about the illegal seal hunters and their slaughter. Buruk claims that war will be unavoidable, but Seren believes that the Warlock King wants peace. The King says that Seren's job as Acquitor is complete, and dismisses her.

Seren joins the Edur's Letherii slaves, where Feather Witch is reading the tiles of the Holds. In a trance, she visits the Holds, as she had done before the Wyval attacked her. This time, each of the Holds has changed and they seem to be in danger. The Beast Hold has two rulers, and the Azath Hold is under siege. Most notably, the Empty Hold is now crowded with visitors, who she says are contesting for the Empty Throne and positions within that Hold.
