Brys finds himself deep underwater. There are dolmens on the seabed, each with etchings depicting a variety of creatures. One of them has been ruined, indicating that the creature has escaped. An armored figure approaches Brys, and explains that when a god is forgotten, it dies. Mael offered another option to the elder gods who would be forgotten: he enslaved them within the dolmens so that they would not die. The armored man was made to guard the gods. He fights Brys, but is weak and easily beaten by Brys. Brys has mercy on him and the gods. He gives the armored man his Letherii sword, gives some of his blood, and asks to hear the names of all the forgotten gods. He is given their names, and then returns to his body in Letheras. He tells Kuru Qan, "An ancient god, stripped of its names, bound by a new one. It now serves the Edur." (Midnight Tides, p 175, UK edition, trade paperback.)
