Samar Dev and Karsa Orlong encounter some people known as Anibar. The Anibar saw him slaughter the bhederin, and want him to kill some grey-skinned invaders who arrived in boats in exchange for a penis bone. Karsa agrees. The Anibar say that an Iron Prophet predicted someone like Karsa would come to save them. The Iron Prophet, who they call the King, is named Iskar Jarak, and he is a Mezla.

Taralack Veed and Icarium talk. Veed explains that Icarium's father had been imprisoned in an Azath House, and Icarium tried to free him. Icarium failed, got mad, shattered a warren, destroyed an Azath, and released bad stuff into the world. Icarium's father wanted to be a Guardian of an Azath House, so he did not want to be freed. The cult of the Nameless Ones was created to follow Icarium around, using companions like Mappo and Taralack Veed. They want to guide Icarium's destruction, and now want to direct him towards a new threat. Meanwhile, Cotillion makes a deal with Mappo to free Icarium from some sort of infection in order to save him. Cotillion worries that the Nameless Ones will do something desperate that harms the Azath further. Cotillion and Shadowthrone (Kellanved and Dancer) had tried to find and learn about all the Azath in the world, but gave up because there are too many.

At the end of the previous chapter, Cutter, Greyfrog, Heboric, and Scillara were slaughtered at the same place where we met Barathol Mekhar from the Prologue. Now we find Barathol Mekhar and others from the town trying to save the lives of the dead and dying. L'oric shows up somehow (?) and uses healing magic to save Cutter and Scillara. So, the shocking turn of events at the end of Book Two is already inconsequential, as magical healing has undone those deaths.
Scillara gives birth to a blue baby, the father being Napan. Meanwhile, Felisin the Younger has escaped the slaughter and is found by some people who call her the Chosen One, Sha'ik Reborn Again. It is explained that Poliel, goddess of plague, has joined the Chained One.
