Ganoes Paran, Ganath, and Hedge are in the Jaghut underworld, Verdith'anath, the Bridge of Death. They encounter Karpolan Demesand and his caravan of the Trygalle Trade Guild. They have drinks together. Paran gives his theory on what an ascendant is. He says that an ascendant who has worshipers becomes a god. Those gods who lose worshipers can be rediscovered in various ways. Also, he suggests that it is a statistical probability that with pressure (wars, famines, etc.) great people will be found and will ascend. There are so many ascendants in present times because there is so much pressure.
Together, they all travel along the bridge. They are attacked by some creatures, and one of the Trade Guild shareholders is killed. They later come across the remains of another Trygalle Trade Guild caravan which has been attacked and all the people killed. Demesand recognizes Trade Mistress Darpareth Vayd, who had been missing for two years and was more powerful than him. Paran knows that two Hounds of Shadow destroyed this caravan, because he was the one who freed the Hounds from the sword Dragnipur. They push the ruined caravan over the edge of the bridge and proceed. They reach the end of the bridge and find the land flooded with water. They hear a loud cry in the distance, and hear a large beast coming towards them. They flee.
