Leoman spoke with the Queen of Dreams in private. No one else was allowed to attend the ritual. Even the priests fled when the Queen arrived. Leoman orders Corabb to guard his back during the imminent battle, along with Dunsparrow, who Corabb hates.
The Malazan sappers blow a hole in Y'Ghatan's wall. Leoman insists that they get to the Temple of Scilissara immediately. The Malazans enter the city, but are ambushed. The buildings are soaked in olive oil and set aflame, which is why the population evacuated earlier. Fighting erupts in the burning city. Soldiers search the city for Leoman.
In the Temple of the Queen of Dreams, Leoman reveals that he is fleeing the city, abandoning Dryjhna's army to die. Corabb is deeply disappointed. Leoman's high mage, L'oric "son of Osserc" opens a gate and they see the Queen of Dreams. She says that the role of Sha'ik is vacant and offers it to L'oric, and he accepts. L'oric, Leoman, and Dunsparrow go through the gate. Corabb stays behind and the gate closes.
Corabb finds children in the city and helps them escape. They encounter Malazans who help them leave the burning city. Corabb and Strings get stranded together, while the children are taken to safety. Strings is hurt, but Corabb decides to carry him out even though they are enemies in the war.
The war ends, with Leoman's army and Y'Ghatan destroyed.
