Corabb Bhilan Thenu'alas notices that Leoman of the Flails and Captain Dunsparrow are having sex. Leoman is keeping secrets from Corabb, and Corabb blames Dunsparrow for Leoman's distracted state. In Y'Ghatan, the people used to worship Scalissara, Goddess of Olives. But after so many conquests and losses, the goddess has proven a failure in protecting her worshippers. She has completely fallen out of favour, and the Queen of Dreams has taken her place. Leoman had been raised by the priests of Scalissara. Leoman orders the population of the city to leave. They then go to the Temple of Scalissara, where Leoman plans to speak with the Queen of Dreams.
Icarium and Mappo are in a cavern inside a sky keep where the corpse of the dragon Sorrit has been spiked to Blackwood, with otataral. Her blood has been spilled out. Mappo explains that blood has power that can be absorbed. This dragon had been frozen in the Omtose Phellack ritual. Icarium says that Sorrit was killed in the warren of shadow.

While exploring on his own, Bottle encounters the spirit of a hairy, primitive human-like woman. Eres'al, from which humans evolved. She is pregnant, carrying a Tiste Edur child who would be a "pure candidate" for the Throne of Shadow. She wants to worship Bottle as a god, and he allows it.

Apsalar and Ganoes Paran arrive in Kansu, Seven Cities. They find that a plague has struck the town, which originated somewhere east of Ehrlitan. As had happened in Kartool City in the Prologue, the Temple of D'rek in Kansu is the scene of slaughter. All the D'rek priests were found dead inside. Poliel is blamed for the plague.

Kalam is climbing one of the sky keeps in the Imperial Warren, and gets stuck. He asks Cotillion to help him, so Cotillion appears right away, eating an apple. He helps poor Kalam get down to the ground. They find Quick Ben and Stormy unconscious on the ground. Quick Ben wakes up. Cotillion explains that Stormy has fast self-healing magic, so all his wounds (broken legs and ribs, internal injuries) will heal in a few minutes. They happen to be at an old temple to Kilmandaros, Grizzin Farl, or K'rul. Cotillion creates a rope that leads up to something, and then leaves.
