In Ugarat, Samar Dev performs an autopsy on the reptilian demon that Karsa Orlong defeated. The demon has a brain more advanced than humans, four lungs, three stomachs filled with powerful acid and insect-like machines. She returns home to find Karsa looking at her maps. He is interested in a place to the north of Seven Cities called Sepik. It is an island kingdom, so remote that it is probably ignored by the Empire. It has two populations, one controlling the other. Karsa wants to go there.
Kalam, Quick Ben, and the rest meet up with Tavore. They bring with them a troop of Khundryl Burned Tears (barbaric warriors wielding axes and scimitars with painted faces). Quick Ben informs her that the Imperial warren is unsafe because there are Moon's Spawns (floating fortresses) inside probably controlled by K'Chain Che'Malle, and that Leoman has reached Y'Ghatan where he will make a stand. Tavore orders Kalam and Quick Ben to go back into the Imperial warren and find out more about the fortresses. Kalam believes that she wants them as far from her as possible. Kalam and Quick Ben plan to sneak into a fortress together, leaving their soldiers behind.
Apsalar uses the Shadow warren to cross the A'Rath Strait, north of Ehrlitan. In the warren, she sees an ancient, long-gone Edur forest, all the trees uprooted. The dragons she saw earlier had fought here. She finds a rope leading up, and climbs it. It is attached to an anchor, so it leads up to a boat. On the boat, she meets Ganoes Paran. He tells her that he is Master of the Deck of Dragons, and that the Crippled God has found many allies. He is on his way to Quon Tali. Apsalar agrees to go with him.
