Icarium and Mappo find an area that is bare rock that seems to have been shattered unnaturally by some force. They climb down a crevasse and find a lake within. Icarium says it is the melted remains of Omtose Phellack magic. He finds a K'Chain Che'Malle within a flying machine. Mappo is surprised when Icarium says it has a stubby tail. Mappo finds a basalt K'Chain Che'Malle skykeep embedded in the rock, and thinks that it might be the cause of the shattering of the surrounding rock. Icarium and Mappo look for an entrance into the keep.

Cutter, Heboric, Scillara, and Felisin Younger arrive at a monastery of D'rek and find that the priests are all dead, their corpses very hot. They stop to get water from the well, when the Soldier of High House Death arrives. He rambles something about the Tyrant returning soon to Darujhistan, and that the Seguleh who are in hiding will be his army. Cutter is worried and feels compelled to return to Darujhistan. The Soldier leaves through a gate to a warren, but leaves his spear behind.
In the skykeep, Icarium and Mappo find silvery portals that take them to a huge zero-gravity chamber that holds another skykeep. Inside that skykeep, they find a dead dragon, who Icarium says he knew as Sorrit, whose aspect was Serc.

Apsalar, Telorast, and Curdle visit a tower inhabited by a big guy named Urko. He used to know Dancer (now Cotillion). He has assembled the skeletal remains of a T-Rex type creature, and some miniature versions of it. Telorast and Curdle possess the smaller skeletons and have fun. Urko assures Apsalar that Cotillion keeps his word. If he promised her that she would be free once she performs his tasks, then she will be free.
Leoman of the Flails and his army arrive at the gates of Y'Ghatan and meet with the Falah'd, Vedor. Leoman beheads Vedor and claims the city for himself. Vedor's second in command is Captain Dunsparrow, who is Malazan. Leoman appoints her as third, with Corabb Bhilan Thenu'alas as his second in command.
