A Tiste Andii shadow wraith named Wither begins following Udinaas. He wants to stay hidden in Udinaas' shadow and help Udinaas. He leads Udinaas to the shoreline where he uncovers a magic arrowhead that is hundreds of millenia old.

Udinaas goes to sleep and travels back in time to when the Edur and Andii battled the K'Chain Che'Malle (the prologue). It was widely believed that it was the Andii who betrayed the Edur, but Udinaas witnesses the Edur betray the Andii. He now views the Edur in a less favourable way.

Mayen is a guest in the Sengar home for the first time, as Fear's betrothed. In one year, Fear and Mayen will move into a house together. During the conversation, Rhulad boasts of his battle skills, despite never being in a battle. His father, Tomad, calls him on it and tells him to speak truthfully. Rhulad becomes angry, and says that he believes that the Warlock King will sacrifice him to begin war and spill his blood on the bow of the first ship. His father denies that the Warlock King will perform any sacrifice. Trull is suspicious of the Warlock's King's motives for choosing all four Sengar sons to go to the Ice Fields and retrieve the ice spear.

While serving at the meal, Udinaas spills some food. Uruth notices that his hands are wounded. Other slaves accuse him of being possessed by the Wyval that he fought. Uruth uses sorcery to read his mind, but says that she does not find any trace of possession. In secret, Feather Witch asks Udinaas about it. He tells her that if Uruth had inspected his shadow, she would have found something. Feather Witch is surprised that an Andii shadow wraith would follow a Letherii. He says that the wraith wants to use him to get revenge on the Edur.
