Ammanas meets with Iskaral Pust in the realm of shadow. Iskaral is unable to keep his thoughts to himself, and makes some very insulting statements about Ammanas. Despite the insults, Ammanas declares that Iskaral "will have to do" and dismisses the priest. Cotillion voices disagreement with the decision, but Ammanas leaves.
Cotillion goes to a ring of standing stones and is accompanied by Edgewalker and Baran, a Hound. Edgewalker explains that they are in the "underworld" and see only the bottom of the stones and the roots of the trees. There is a surface world where the top halves of the stones and the tops of the trees exist. There are three dragons imprisoned at the stones, and Edgewalker wants to observe Cotillion speak with them.
The dragons are Eleint, named Ampelas, Kalse, and Eloth. They were imprisoned by Anomander Rake when the Tiste Andii invaded and destroyed the realm. The Andii did not want anyone to occupy the throne of shadow. Prior to the invasion, a Tiste Edur occupied the throne. The dragons wanted to take the throne so that they could heal the shattered warren of Emurlahn.
The dragons claim that Ammanas sits on a false throne. The real Shadow Throne exists in another fragment of Emurlahn.
Eloth claims to be the Mistress of Illusions, the creator of Meanas, Mockra, and Thyr. Ampelas claims to have created Emurlahn. They created the warrens at the order of K'rul. For each warren, there are dragons, each representing the blood of K'rul, which touches all warrens. Eleints share ownership of the warrens with each other, so that one warren may have three dragons associated with it rather than only one. K'rul and his Eleint are the sources of sorcery, creators of the warrens. The Eleint reside in Starvald Demelain so that their power doesn't taint the warrens, but the Soletaken, who are children of Tiam and possess the power of the Eleint, are free to go where they please and have become a problem for the warrens. Scabandari Bloodeye is blamed for doing the first harm to the warrens when he created a gate in Kurald Emurlahn. Gates are wounds to the warrens.
The Elient admit that when they are killed, they stay dead. Also, the Crippled God is an "elemental force", not a force of sorcery as the Eleint are. They explain that the Crippled God is using the shattered warren of shadow to attack all the warrens since a shattered warren is very weak. His first targets seem to be the Shadow Throne and the First Throne of the T'lann Imass.
Edgewalker says that he is an elemental force and is willing to help Cotillion. Cotillion says that they will need to find allies to fight the Crippled God.
Icarium and Mappo are at the shore to the Raraku Sea. Mappo has found the skeletal remains of Jaghut children while Icarium joyfully bathes in the water. The children were all slaughtered as part of a terrible battle with the T'lann Imass. Icarium recalls cities in this area of the world from as far back as the First Empire. Mappo explains that those cities are long gone. Icarium wishes to stay a while longer to see if any more memories resurface. Then they will seek out the site of the ancient city of Trebur. They had been there 80 years ago, but Icarium did not remember anything. Mappo fears that it may be different this time.

Cutter, Greyfrog, Scillara, Felisin Younger, and Heboric are heading to the coast where they will travel to the Otataral island. Scillara is pregnant, but has not told anyone yet. Four bandits enter the camp to rob Scillara and Felisin, but Greyfrog kills them all and sucks out their brains. He hides the bodies before Cutter and Heboric join them. The group now has the horses that belonged to the bandits.
Smiles, Bottle, Tarr, and Koryk are sitting around while the Fourteenth Army leaders figure out what to do in their pursuit of Leoman of the Flails and his army of the Apocalypse. They get into an argument and Smiles hits Koryk with a knife. Soldier mischief, blah blah.
Fiddler and Kalam chat. They think Pearl and Lostara Yil are with the army in Seven Cities so that the Emperess can keep an eye on Tavore. Quick Ben joins them after meeting with Tavore.
