Apsalar arrives at the city of Ehrlitan on the Seven Cities continent and rents a room at an inn. In private, she weeps over abandoning Cutter/Crokus. She chose to perform a mission for Cotillion rather than stay with Cutter, believing that he deserves better than her.
Apsalar leaves the inn and travels through the warren of shadow to the Jen'rah, a flat-topped hill in Ehrlitan. Still in the realm of shadow, she meets two spirits, Telorast and Curdle. They seem to be insane and are making up stories about themselves. It is impossible to tell why they were imprisoned in the shadow realm. Apsalar promises to take them to a gate out of the shadow realm. When she tells them her name, they claim to have known the original Apsalar. They say Apsalar was an Imass, and not very friendly.
They find a gate out to Ehrlitan, and the spirits want to find bodies that they can inhabit. They ask if Ehrlitan has certain animals, but only name animals that exist in the warren of Starvald Demelain. This seems to be a clue as to the spirits' true origins.
At the ancient center of Ehrlitan, she finds many beings imprisoned in the shadow realm, including three dragons. Back in the mortal world, she seeks the one who Cotillion wants her to assassinate, but he is already dead. A man tries to assassinate her instead, but she defeats him. She inspects the body, and discovers that the man was a priest of the Nameless Ones.
Leoman of the Flails leads the remainder of Sha'ik's rebel army into the desert, pursued by Tavore's army. He curses the Holy Book of Drujhna in a rage. Corabb Bhilan Thenu'alas, a pious warrior, follows closely to Leoman. Corabb believes that the army that Leoman leads is the Apocalypse, even though the goddess Dryjhna is dead. Corabb eats a toad at a well, and sees hallucinations. Everyone he sees is feathered, including Leoman. He refers to Leoman as "Leoman of the Feathers".
