In Kartool City, on an island northeast of Malaz City, Sergeant Hellian investigates a problem at the Grand Temple of D'rek. A man named Banaschar says he travelled by ship from Malaz Island because he sensed that something was wrong at the temple. It is an unsafe season for travel, and Hellian is skeptical about him coming on such a dangerous journey based only on a feeling. It is the festival of Istral'fennidahn, dedicated to D'rek. At the Temple, there are many dead and decaying spiders. Normally an orgy would have occurred to mark the time of year. But inside they find rotting flesh, hair, bile, and blood. Banaschar insists that priests investigate, not mages or soldiers. In the city, there have always been temples subservient to D'rek: Soliel, Poliel, Beru, Burn, Hood, and Fener. After the Malazans conquered Kartool, additional temples were built: the Queen of Dreams, Shadow, Dessembrae, Togg, and Oponn. The power of D'rek's temple was diminished and lost political influence. As other priests discover what has happened at the Grand Temple, Banaschar disappears.
