Hannan Mosag, Trull, Fear, and four hundred Edur warriors sail out to meet the Letherii fleet who harvested the seals in Edur territory. Hannan Mosag summons something that kills all the Letherii. The Edur warriors do nothing except witness the slaughter.

Udinaas dreams that he is visited by Menandore, Daughter Dawn. She tells him that he is infected with the blood of a Wyval, and then rapes him. Feather Witch appears in the dream, and tells him that the Wyval disease will make him go insane and kill him. Udinaas then sees a flight of dragons and wyval, and believes that they are going to war.

Fear leads two of his brothers, Trull and Rhulad, to the Stone Bowl. They see the skeleton of a dragon and other creatures. Fear explains that these are the remains of Scabandari Bloodeye, Father Shadow. Scabandari learned that the Kaschan had attacked Mother Dark with Kaschan sorcery, thus dooming her and all existence to extinction. The Kaschan did this because they were facing extinction at the hands of the Tiste. The Elder gods and every ascendant turned against Scabandari, killed him, and imprisoned his soul. It was an Elder god named Kilmandaros who killed him. Fear guesses that the Warlock King wants to get revenge against the Elder gods and ascendants for the murder of Father Shadow. This knowledge is known only to the Sengar family and some of the Edur women. It is not known how the Warlock King found the Stone Bowl to learn of Father Shadow's death.
