score: 0Seren Pedac accompanies Buruk the Pale's trade caravan through the hills east of Reach Inlet on their way to the Hiroth. The caravan is composed of three wagons containing iron ingots. They stop to make camp for the night at the site of an Edur shrine. There is a worn statue of Father Shadow, and black stones with indistinguishable images of moving people inside. She touches the stones to receive warmth and healing.

score: 0Hull Beddict arrives at the camp during the night. The Nerek servants regard him very highly. Before the Nerek were enslaved by the Letherii, Hull was appointed Sentinal by the King and ordered to learn about the tribes of more primitive people in the north. Hull visited them, learned about their culture, and formed very close ties with them. The King used Hull's information to exploit and enslave the tribal people. Angered and disgusted, Hull sent word back to the King that he was resigning as Sentinal. He has never returned the Letheras, choosing to live in the wilds of the north instead.

Nifadas tells him that Buruk the Pale carries some instructions regarding the Great Meeting, but none of the instructions come from himself or the King. However, Brys' estranged brother Hull will think that Buruk is working for the King and will probably act against Buruk. Nifadas wants Brys to act as the King's representative at the Great Meeting and act against Buruk in his own way.

score: 0Brys stands in hiding to watch a conversation between Commander Unnutal Hebaz and Prince Quillas, Queen Janall, his bodyguard, and her consort. The Queen challenges the authority of the King, saying that the orders of her and the Prince should be more important. They also do not like that the former King's Champion now works for the King's Sorceror. They want him for themselves. Brys reveals himself while defending the Commander from what he thinks is an attack. The Queen then claims that this meeting was at the will of the Prince, not her.

score: 0The King's Sorceror shows Brys his room where he reads giant tiles of the Holds. He is puzzled by the readings he has been getting recently. Because a tile from the Dragon Hold appears in the reading, he thinks a major event will happen soon. Brys suggests it is related to the coming of the "Seventh Closure", which is a prophesy that states: "The king who rules at the Seventh Closure shall be transformed and so shall become the First Emperor reborn." (Midnight Tides, p. 64, UK edition, trade paperback.) Brys then tells Kuru Qan that he believes that Hull might kill Prince Quillas at the Great Meeting.

score: 0Shand, Rissarh, and Hejun bring Tehol to a house they purchased and explain what they want to do. They are all half-breeds, partially being of the races enslaved by the Letherii. They want revenge against the Letherii people for what they did to the tribal people. With Tehol's help, they want to scam the Merchant Tolls (a stock market) and destroy the economy of Letheras. Tehol has done this before, but intentionally lost most of the money. Some of the money is stashed in a secret location. They also know that Tehol is harbouring some of the tribal people on islands that he owns. The three women want to buy more islands. Tehol agrees to help them, but is concerned that the Edur will conquer the Letherii.
