Scabandari Bloodeye stabs Silchas Ruin in the back with a magic dagger. The Tiste Edur forces turn on the few remaining Tiste Andii and kill them all. Scabandari plans to defend the gate to the K'Chain Che'Malle world and only allow Tiste Edur to enter. There are other Tiste Andii already living in this world, so Scabandari vows to hunt them down and kill them. Scabandari imprisons Silchas in an Azath tower.
Mael, Elder Lord of the Seas, arrives to investigate the rift created between worlds, and speaks with the Jaghut, Gothos. Mael asks Gothos to preserve the world in ice with his ritual because this world contains something very important for the future. Mael reveals that Anomander Rake lives in this world.

Much later, in 1159th year of Burn's Sleep, a swordmaker named Withal wakes to find his city destroyed. He meets a hooded figure who claims to be a fallen god. The fallen god insists that Withal create a sword for him.
